About this site
Best Online Games is a small, hand-maintained directory. 34 games across 13 categories, each one played before it was written about.
What the score means
Every game carries an editorial score out of 10. It is our opinion, formed by playing the game, and it is not an average of anything. We do not aggregate user reviews, we do not import scores from review aggregators, and we do not display player counts we cannot verify.
The score weighs how a game plays today. A game that reviewed well in 2014 and has since been hollowed out by monetisation scores lower than it once would have. A game that shipped rough and has spent five years improving scores higher.
What gets a game excluded
- A dead queue. If matchmaking cannot fill a lobby, we cannot recommend the game, however good it was.
- Monetisation that decides matches. Cosmetics are fine. Selling the win is not.
- Anything where the game is incidental to a financial product. This is the main reason our Web3 category is short.
How the ranking works
The main ranking is ordered by editorial score. Category rankings are the same order, filtered, so a game never sits at a different position depending on which page you found it on. Positions change when a game changes, and the date on each profile shows when we last revisited it.
Money
There are no paid placements. Nobody can buy a position, a score, or an entry in the library. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on this page and on the affected profiles before anything is published.
