Valorant takes the round structure and buy phase that Counter-Strike established and adds a layer of agent abilities on top, walls, flashes, recon darts, area denial. The important design decision is that abilities are bought with round money like any other item, so using one is a real economic choice rather than a cooldown you spend for free.

Gunplay remains the deciding factor. First-shot accuracy is high, movement inaccuracy is punishing, and the game rewards holding an angle and clicking precisely far more than it rewards ability spam. Riot's anti-cheat is invasive at the kernel level, which is worth knowing before you install it, and it is a significant part of why the competitive integrity holds up.
